How can schools and teachers help develop real life skills in their students that would prepare them for their future?

Temenuzka Hristova, the principal of the only school in the Bulgarian village of Bohot, believes that students need to learn so much more than academic knowledge at school. She recognizes the need for life-long skill development in her school and takes it upon herself to do something about the issue.

After identifying the needs of the students and talking with their parents, she created a completely new school subject – Artevita – The School of Life.

After identifying the needs of the students and talking with their parents, she created a completely new school subject – Artevita – The School of Life.

The goal of Artevita is to help children develop skills that will be useful to them in life outside of school, no matter what age they are.

During these lessons the students learn:

  • How to manage their personal and family budget;
  • How to cook a healthy breakfast for themselves and their family;
  • How to find necessary information and check its credibility;
  • How to fill out a form or application;

The success of the new school subject is impressive not only because it is very exciting for the students, but it even increases the commitment of parents to the topics at hand.

Students love seeing the meaning and application of their new skills and their parents have the opportunity to learn from their children and be more involved in the learning process.

Anton Strashimirov Elementary School in the village of Bohot is a participant of the first graduating class of the Model Schools program of the Teach for Bulgaria Foundation, and Temenuzka Hristova is actively involved in the program as a mentor of other school teams across Bulgaria for the third year in a row.
